The Sacred Image of the Icon: A World of Belief

The Sacred Image of the Icon: A World of Belief is an exhibition at the Varley Gallery of Markham Ontario.

This exhibition examines the socio-cultural differences of various geographic regions from the early Christian Diaspora to present day, focusing on significant moments in history, which led to certain changes in iconographic styles and representations.

The creation of this exhibition stems from the curators’ belief that all icons regardless of their aesthetic qualities, lead beyond themselves and make the divine present in the Church. Like the liturgy (the religious service performed in the Church), they serve as both remembrance and representation of the sacred.

When assembled into meaningful sequence, icons create a visual hierarchy that defines the viewer’s place in the continuum from earth to heaven.
